About Ross Winter -
Born in Montreal and currently living in Toronto. Partner in CAMERA LUCIDA photographs, formerly dealers in vintage images.
Some pictures demand to be taken, for their inherent strength or associations. Others have to be worked for. The products are sequences of images illustrating change over time; series of images which collectively show the character of a place, event, or experience; and single telling images. Art is as I find it, an expression of the moment, or of the infinite. An education based on the Bauhaus method biases my photographic work toward graphic potential, collage, and abstraction, with a focus on cities and urban change. It explores material as diverse as middle-America, art spaces, commerce in contemporary China, metropolitan places, and people in cities. The images explore the boundary between figuration and abstraction, with influences from the history of 20th century painting.
I first published a group of photos of Morocco in 1970, in the Canadian Architect magazine. Time passed and eventually, in 2010, I joined Propeller Gallery. My days are currently spent curating a collection of vintage photography, and as a contemporary photographer pursuing my own projects. Images are currently held in private and corporate collections in Toronto, Vancouver, New York, Houston, Montgomery, and Perth (Australia).
