Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts presents
ReArt, a solo-exhibition of mixed media artwork and installation by Michelle
Salter. ReArt uses humor to question social and environmental issues.
ReArt is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on technological obsolescence and
its impact on our society and environment. Salter uses strong contrasts
in texture and in symbolism to drive home the messages in her work. The
issues of recycling and conservation of resources long ago crossed over
from the purview of a fanatical few and are now lodged firmly into the
psyche of mainstream society. We are all aware of the problems created
by cities unable to dispose of their own garbage. ReArt gives new life
to materials that no longer fulfill their original function.
"I mix homey, organic crafts such as knitting, crochet and origami with
the hard-edged plastic products of obsolete technologies to produce quirky
pieces", says Salter.
This exhibition questions how we memorialize ourselves, the loss of tangible
memories due to technological obsolescence, gender stereotyping, and the
amount of electronic and technological waste our society generates in
a closed ecosystem.
