Snakes and Ladders - beeswax, paper, thread, natural substances

Using natural materials and ritual-like processes, Paul Roorda's work poses questions about established Christianity and alternative religious practice. Ashes, earth, salt, rust, seeds, insects, snake skin, bone and bible pages are folded repetitively into small pieces of paper, tied with thread and coated with melted beeswax to create larger compositions.

Presently, Paul is exhibiting a series of self-portraits and portraits of my family as figures from the Bible. This work reinterprets the religious figures so often portrayed throughout the history of art. In his Game series, Roorda explores popular board games as metaphors for the tension between religious tradition and change. And in my Labyrinth series, he examines the labyrinth as an image of the spiritual journey both historically and today.
